CIVIL APEALS PRO BONO PROGRAM– OHIO EIGHTH DISTRICT

Civil Case Appellate Pro Bono Program

For People Seeking Help with Civil Appeals

If you lost a civil case in Cuyahoga County and cannot afford a lawyer, you may qualify for free legal help through the Civil Case Appellate Pro Bono Program.

Here is what you need to know

  • This program helps people who cannot pay for an appellate lawyer.

  • Volunteer lawyers may review your case and, if approved, may represent you for free.

  • To apply, email your case details and court documents to Pshipman@clemetrobar.org

Important notes

  • This program is only for civil cases in the Ohio Eighth District Court of Appeals.

  • Submitting an application does not guarantee you will get a lawyer.

  • A panel of volunteer attorneys will review your case to decide if counsel can be appointed.

The panel will consider factors such as

  • Whether your case raises a valid legal issue

  • If the claimed error was properly preserved for appeal

  • If you had a lawyer in the trial court and why you no longer do

  • If a volunteer lawyer is available to accept the case

  • Whether deadlines to file or submit briefs can still be met

This program provides civil appeals help in Cleveland to give more people access to justice.
